The Federal Aviation Administration proposed a $146,500 fine against Spirit Airlines Friday, saying the company tried to ship a compressed air cylinder in a damaged container.
Spirit employees offered five shipments of compressed oxygen cylinders to FedEx for air transport from Detroit to New York in August and September 2022, the FAA said.
The agency alleges that FedEx employees in Detroit rejected one of those shipments because the container with the compressed air cylinder wasn’t labeled and marked properly, plus was damaged and noncompliant with Flame Penetration Resistance test requirements.
The FAA also alleges that none of the Spirit employees involved had completed hazardous material training as it pertains to Department of Transportation special permits.
Spirit Airlines hasn’t responded to a request for comment.
