The leadership political action committee of former President Donald Trump spent $5.6 million on legal fees in February, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
The PAC, called Save America, spent more last month than it took in, paying $7.2 million while taking in $5 million. The money the PAC collected didn’t even come from donors but from another PAC, Make America Great Again Inc.
MAGA Inc. has sent more than $50 million to Save America since last year to help pay Mr. Trump’s legal fees.
Save America had $4 million on hand at the end of last month. It also owes just over half a million dollars in new legal fees.
Fundraising has been difficult for the presumptive Republican nominee for president. His campaign had $33.5 million on hand at the end of February, FEC filings showed. President Biden’s campaign reported having more than double that amount at the end of last month.
Mr. Trump’s legal fees are from his indictments in New York, Georgia, Washington and Florida. He also owes millions in fines for two civil lawsuits out of New York to author E. Jean Carroll for sexual abuse and defamation and to New York for committing business fraud.
This month, he posted a $91.6 million bond for the defamation case but said Monday he was having trouble securing a deal large enough to cover the $464 million bond in his business fraud case.
He might get help at a fundraiser next month in Palm Beach, Florida, which is expected to draw some of the Republican Party’s wealthiest donors.
