New York City police said a man stabbed a young woman to death and wounded her twin sister early Sunday after the women rejected his advances inside a Brooklyn deli.
Authorities identified the slain sister as 19-year-old Samiyah Spain, who died from a stab wound to the chest.
Police said Ms. Spain’s sister, who wasn’t identified, was stabbed in the arm. She was in stable condition at a hospital.
The attack took place around 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the Park Slope neighborhood in western Brooklyn. No arrests have been made so far.
Alphonso Goodson, the women’s grandfather, told the New York Post that the man became irate after the women turned him down.
“He walked in and started hitting on her,” Mr. Goodson told the newspaper. “She said, ‘I don’t want to be bothered with you. Leave me alone.’ Then the store owner put him out.”
“He started kicking on the door, he started banging on the door,” the grandfather said. “I don’t know if they called the police, but at that time [the store owner] should have called. And then when [the twins] left the store, that’s when he attacked them.”
New York State Assembly candidate Tony Herbert, who is running as a Democrat in Brooklyn, called for tougher penalties for violent crimes during a press event Sunday.
“We have to make sure that people understand that if you pull out a knife on somebody, you’re going to go to jail,” Herbert said.
