Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers would be a good running mate because he’s strong on questioning the rise of artificial intelligence and he appeals to younger voters.
Mr. Kennedy’s third-party bid has made him a wild card in the presidential election, and his interest in tapping Mr. Rodgers, or possibly former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, has generated additional interest in his campaign.
“We want somebody young who’s going to look out for that generation,” Mr. Kennedy said Wednesday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox News @ Night.” “Aaron Rodgers is battle-tested. He’s stood up. He’s been hammered by the press, stood up for things we believe in.”
“I like that part of his character,” he said. “He’s a critical thinker and I think we need that at the time as you know the rise of A.I. We need people who understand that you cannot always trust authority just because somebody’s in charge.”
The scion of a storied political family, Mr. Kennedy plans to announce his vice presidential pick on March 26.
He has said he has had numerous discussions with Mr. Rodgers.
Mr. Ventura, meanwhile, introduced Mr. Kennedy to a crowd at a recent campaign stop and is on the shortlist.
Allies for Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump have raised concerns about Mr. Kennedy siphoning support away from their preferred pick.
Polls have shown that could happen.
They also have shown Mr. Kennedy is popular among young voters and independents.
“My father used to say one of the duties of living as a citizen of democracy is to maintain a constant posture of skepticism toward authority and I think Aaron’s shown that,” Mr. Kennedy said.
