A Canadian lawmaker has proposed a bill that would “criminalize sermons and messages using the Bible or other religious texts as the basis for critiquing other religions or addressing issues such as transgender rights” (“Canadian measure would remove free speech protection for quoting Bible, sacred texts,” web, March 1).

Yves-Francois Blanchet contends that the bill would allow the prosecution of antisemitic speech. In a recent poll, two-thirds of Canadians affirmed their support for the measure.

But this bill has nothing to do with antisemitism and everything in the world to do with Christianity. Christians in Britain and Finland have been prosecuted for publicly expressing their religious beliefs. Why would it be any different in Canada?

It’s time for Canadians to stand up against this shameful piece of legislation.
