Sen. Katie Britt, the Alabama Republican panned by Democratic critics and pundits last week for her delivery of the GOP rebuttal to President Biden’s State of the Union address, said they wanted to muzzle her because she’s a conservative woman.

She was ridiculed for highlighting a human trafficking case that occurred in Mexico when George W. Bush was president when criticizing Mr. Biden’s handling of the southern border.

“None of the media has covered the fact that under Trump in 2018, human trafficking was a $500 million business. It is now, under Joe Biden, a $13 billion business,” Ms. Britt said on Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz’s podcast. “They want to silence a conservative woman for speaking out on this topic. They don’t want to bring light and help the women who are actually being trafficked.”

Her speech prompted days of ridicule from critics who said her delivery was over the top and insincere, and “Saturday Night Live” featured her in a cold open with Scarlett Johansson playing the role of Ms. Britt.

“It felt like the slowest couple of days in politics forever. I thought, ’Can nothing else happen? How many days can we go where I am literally the stories from top to bottom?’” she recalled. “My crime was putting too much passion, too much heart and soul behind the issues that I genuinely care about. And they slaughtered me across the airways.”
