There is an old saying that when people find themselves in a peculiarly bad predicament, they are “stuck somewhere between a rock and a hard place.” Certainly, with the release of the Robert K. Hur report in February and a recent AP-NORC poll, which found that 60% of U.S. adults doubt that President Joe Biden has the mental capacity to carry out his duties of the oval office, the president has found himself in that proverbial unpleasant and difficult dilemma.

On the one hand, the conclusion in the Hur report that the president willfully mishandled classified documents (which is the cornerstone of one of the criminal proceedings against his potential opponent, former President Donald Trump) opens Mr. Biden up to an obviously impeachable offense or criminal indictment after he leaves office if there is no presidential immunity. However, the flip side of the coin, which was also contained in Mr. Hur’s report and at least confirmed in the minds of six out of 10 adults, indicates that Mr. Biden did not possess the necessary cognitive ability to be held accountable for his actions, even though they may be criminal in nature. Hence the source of the dilemma for the president.

If you have been paying close attention, you are aware that the immediate and continuing response from the Biden camp has been unanimous in its support of his cognitive abilities. His erstwhile ventriloquial figure Karine Jean-Pierre has repeatedly dismissed concerns about the president’s fitness for office. While eschewing all calls for a cognitive test to determine the mental state of Mr. Biden, Ms. Jean-Pierre stated that the president’s personal physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, believes Mr. Biden proves his cognitive ability “every day [in] how he operates and how he thinks.”

In all fairness, I would point out that there are numerous polls that are also critical of Mr. Trump.

The same AP-NORC poll, which posed such a great question about Mr. Biden’s mental acuity, also found that 57% of those polled had the same opinion of Mr. Trump mental abilities. In addition, several pundits have pontificated that the choice for the voting populace in the 2024 presidential race will come down to choosing between a narcissistic candidate or one who is in a chronic state of dementia. Whether that particular thought pattern is correct or not, it is clear as a whole that Americans are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs and that they are fearful that there is little hope for a positive change in the near future. This whole scenario should be of great concern to anyone who has even the faintest concern for the continued viability of our nation.

Unfortunately, when conservative Christians attempt to speak into the fog, any vocalization of patriotic fervor is frowned upon by a growing segment of our population. Nevertheless, what many are now coming to realize is that America is now in the throes of a similar situation to what Germany found itself in during the 1930s. What developed in that country was a pitched battle between communism and fascism, two illegitimate imposters born of the same father of autocratic tyranny. Up until the present, the only saving grace in America has been the strength of our economy. But now, with the “drunk sailor” spending of the COVID-19 era coupled with apparently no concern for the destructive legacy being left to our prodigy to repay our exorbitant debt, America, as we knew her, is on the verge of falling into a severe economic depression and ultimately into the oppressive hands of a despot.

Many of the left-leaning demographic mentality are now prognosticating that if Mr. Trump somehow wins this next presidential election, his resulting governance will not end short of his assuming some sort of dictatorial role. Whether Mr. Trump’s potential ascendency to the White House will be the final catalyst in the ruination of America seems to be based to a great extent on nothing more than political rhetoric. However, for anyone paying any attention whatsoever, it should be clear that this nation that we so dearly love is in great peril, a peril that arises from both far ends of the political spectrum.

One thing now for certain is that given the present questionable mental condition of our current president it is clear that when it comes to the executive branch of our government, America is currently being governed by an individual, or entity, who has not been rightfully elected by the people. Based on these observations as well as the sentiment of the voting public, it would appear that regardless of the outcome of this current election cycle, the deconstruction of our American experiment and our concurrent way of life is in dire jeopardy of collapse from the inside. The greatest threat to America does not lie with China, Russia, or even Middle East terrorism. No, we have met our ultimate enemy, and he is us.

I certainly do not claim to be a prophet, but before you discount these words of warning, please know that it does not take psychic powers to see and comprehend the demonic forces that have come to play in the cities and heartland of America. Nevertheless, there is a way of escape from this catastrophic future that now foreshadows this once-great country. The question is does the United States possess the wisdom to recognize our way of salvation and just as importantly the courage to face the realities needed for deliverance?

Ultimately, the maintenance of any form of good government depends solely on the graciousness and forbearance of God. That divine providence is based on a citizenry who willingly adheres to the natural moral law laid down by our Creator. At Southern Evangelical Seminary we recognize this necessary component of good government and the continued longevity of our beloved nation. After all, it was this natural moral law that formed the original basis of the creation of the United States of America and is firmly embodied in our earliest documents. We intuitively know that we cannot continue to digress from our foundational heritage without the loss of our precious freedoms embodied in our Bill of Rights, inherent rights granted from the hand of God not from any government.

Now is not the time for an irrational reaction to some hyper-emotional plea. Rather, we at Southern Evangelical Seminary are calling for a measured introspective and thoughtful return to the once prevalent goodness imbued in our American spirit. Those of us who claim to be Christ followers also know that the health of our nation is ultimately dependent on the depth of our own faith in our Redeemer and the power found in the humility of our prayers of repentance. Until the day we as a nation return to God’s way, America will continue unimpeded in her spiral of death. At some point, it will be too late. As the lights of freedom dim and burn out all across America, let us blow on the candles of the hearts of God-fearing people in our nation, and we will see by and by.
