The Washington Commanders’ barrage of free-agent acquisitions continued Tuesday as the team agreed to a contract with former Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn.

The 1-year, $5.1 million contract was first announced by Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz.

The 26-year-old safety played four seasons in Carolina, accumulating 17 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and more than 300 tackles.

The 2020 second-round pick came into the league as a versatile prospect — he could play close to the line of scrimmage like a linebacker or retreat deep into the secondary in a more traditional safety role. The Southern Illinois product’s flexible skillset aligns with new coach Dan Quinn’s defensive philosophy.

As defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, Quinn developed an adaptable defense that deployed safeties inside the box and regularly moved pass rushers to different positions on the line.

The Commanders entered the offseason with clear holes in the trenches and the secondary. Though Washington already agreed to contracts with multiple linemen, Chinn is the first defensive back the team has reached a deal with this offseason.

The safety will likely fill the hole left by Kam Curl, a free agent who started 16 games for Washington in 2023.
