Former Trump White House official Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to a Miami prison on March 19 to serve a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the now-defunct House Jan. 6 select committee.
Navarro was sentenced last month after being found guilty of contempt of Congress for refusing to provide documents and cooperate with the House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
A federal judge last month denied his request to stay out of prison while he appealed his conviction. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said none of Navarro’s issues about the appeal is a “substantial” question of law.
Navarro, who advised former President Donald Trump on trade issues, again requested a stay in court papers late Sunday, according to Politico.
“Accordingly, Navarro respectfully reiterates his request for an administrative stay. … Should this Court deny Dr. Navarro’s motion, he respectfully requests an administrative stay so as to permit the Supreme Court review of this Court’s denial,” the papers read.
The select committee subpoenaed Navarro in February 2022, but he said he wouldn’t comply due to Mr. Trump using his executive privilege and calling on him not to testify.
He is the second Trump aide convicted of contempt of Congress. Former White House aide-turned-podcaster Steve Bannon is free pending his appeal.
