Rep. Adam B. Schiff, who was removed from the House Intelligence Committee over accusations of abuse of power, wants U.S. officials to “dumb down” the information they’re willing to give Donald Trump as the presumptive Republican presidential candidate.
Mr. Schiff, a California Democrat who is running to replace the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, cited the dozens of charges against Mr. Trump over the mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
“I have to hope, and knowing the intelligence community as I do, that they will dumb down the briefing for Donald Trump,” Mr. Schiff said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “That is, they will give him no more information than absolutely necessary. Nothing that would reveal sources or methods, because we can’t trust that he will do the right things with that information. He’s been so reckless.”
It is modern custom for the presidential nominee of either major party to receive classified briefings and information, but never has one of them faced allegations of criminal wrongdoing with such information.
“That is the practice, but we’ve never had a situation where one of the candidates for president has been so criminally negligent when it comes to handling, if not worse, classified information,” Mr. Schiff said.
