North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was secretive Sunday about any conversations he may have had with former President Donald Trump about being his running mate.
“Everything about the process of the vice president thing, that’s between the campaign and those that might be being considered,” Mr. Burgum said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“But I would just say that President Trump after his strong debate performance on Thursday and where he was going in the polls before that, what this is doing for his fundraising, the strong performance he has, is he’s got so many good choices that he could pick for this job,” he said.
Mr. Burgum is said to be one of the top contenders on Mr. Trump’s shortlist for V.P. Other choices are said to be Sens. J.D. Vance of Ohio, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida, Tom Cotton of Arkansas; and Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York and Byron Donalds of Florida.
The governor suggested that Mr. Trump could “probably win the election without a vice president,” but said that any discussion of Mr. Burgum actually being the pick is “between the president and I.”
Mr. Trump said earlier this month that he has decided in his head who his running mate will be, but hasn’t told anyone. He is expected to announce his selection at the Republican National Convention next month.
