The Washington Capitals are going to party like it’s 1974. The franchise announced throwback logos and jersey patches to celebrate its 50th season in the D.C. area.
The anniversary celebration will continue throughout the 2024-25 NHL season that begins in October.
The Capitals will wear an anniversary patch on their jerseys and mark the occasion with a special logo on their home ice.
The throwback logos echo the Capitals’ original design with red, white and blue theming.
“We are excited to launch a celebration of the Capitals’ vibrant past and honor our history as we mark 50 years as an NHL franchise,” Jim Van Stone, the organization’s chief business officer, said in a news release. “Fans can anticipate several events and initiatives that will uniquely commemorate this milestone.”
The fan campaign begins with a celebration at Capital One Arena on Oct. 10. Monumental Sports, which owns the Capitals, said the event will feature a headlining musical act and an array of fan experiences.
The Capitals also plan to host an alumni weekend, a red carpet before the home opener and multiple “Eras nights” to highlight different periods in the franchise’s history.
“We are also proud to highlight the Capitals’ impact off the ice … as we pay tribute to 50 years and embrace the future of Capitals hockey,” Van Stone said.
The Capitals will debut their new patches on jerseys at the NHL draft, which begins in Las Vegas on Friday.
