The Washington Wizards are still making front-office moves just two days before the NBA draft. The rebuilding team has hired former Detroit Pistons general manager Troy Weaver as a senior adviser, ESPN reported.
Weaver has experience working with Wizards president Michael Winger and general manager Will Dawkins — the trio spent seven seasons together with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Wizards have not confirmed the news.
The Pistons parted ways with Weaver last month after four consecutive losing seasons.
“He took the pain of rebuilding head on and he did the hard work to get us the flexibility we have today,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a statement. “He also assembled a great core of young men with tremendous skill and character to give us a path to the future.”
After 25 years as a college coach and NBA executive, returning to D.C. is a homecoming for Weaver. The 56-year-old grew up in the District and played his high school basketball at Archbishop Carroll High School in Northeast.
Weaver honed his basketball skills as a coach in the region, leading the powerhouse DC Assault youth team to the renowned AAU Tournament of Champions in 1996.
Wojnarowski reported that Weaver will officially join the Wizards before the NBA draft begins at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in New York City.
