Sen. Chris Coons said President Biden would respect the decision of the Supreme Court on the upcoming ruling on whether former President Donald Trump has presidential immunity from prosecution.
“Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Beam asked Mr. Coons whether Mr. Biden would respect the Supreme Court’s ruling on cases he might not necessarily agree with, like Mr. Trump’s argument that he should have presidential immunity, and cited his critical response to the high court’s ruling on his student-loan forgiveness plan.
“I think there’s a sharp contrast between former President Trump and President Biden in terms of their respect for the rule of law and how they approach both law enforcement and our legal system,” said Mr. Coons, Delaware Democrat.
Mr. Coons brought up the former president’s lack of decorum in the other criminal and civil cases he is facing, like his most recent New York hush money trial where he was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
“Former President Trump was in a courtroom in New York, where he attacked the prosecutor, the prosecution, the judge, the jury, the whole process so many times that before he was ultimately convicted by a jury of his peers of 34 felonies, he was subject to a gag order,” Mr. Coons said.
He praised Mr. Biden for how he handled his son, Hunter Biden, being found guilty by a federal jury in Delaware earlier this month.
“President Biden — we just saw evidence of this, this past week — his own son was convicted here in a court in Wilmington, Delaware, and he did not ever attack or criticize or question the judge, the prosecutor, the jury, the process. In fact, he said he wouldn’t use the pardon power,” Mr. Coons said. “That is a sharp and clear contrast in how they respect the rule of law.”
The court’s decision on Mr. Trump’s claim is expected by the end of this month.
The former president argued late last year that he should be immune from prosecution in special counsel Jack Smith’s case against him regarding his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
“The Supreme Court has unanimously rejected Deranged Jack Smith’s desperate attempt to short circuit our Great Constitution,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social in December. “Crooked Joe Biden and his henchmen waited three years to bring this sham case, and now they have tried and failed to rush this Witch Hunt through the courts. Of course I am entitled to Presidential Immunity. I was President, it was my right and duty to investigate, and speak on, the rigged and stolen 2020 Presidential Election.”
