Detroit automaker Stellantis issued a recall Tuesday affecting over 1 million of its vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.
Stellantis officials said they would deploy an over-the-air software update on 1.16 million vehicles including the Dodge Durango, Chrysler Pacifica, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Jeep Compass, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer Ram Promaster as well as the Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500.
According to the recall notice Stellantis filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the cars’ radio software interferes with the vehicles’ backup camera. In certain cases, the backup camera will not display, increasing the risk of an accident.
Stellantis has not recorded any injuries related to the malfunctioning backup camera.
Stellantis, the Dutch-based carmaker who took over the operations of the former Chrysler Corp. in the U.S., apparently first noticed the issue late last year and began working on a fix. According to the company, over 700,000 vehicles have already received the over-the-air recall update.
Car owners who have not already downloaded the update will receive a notification on their vehicle’s screens asking them to accept the update.
