Rep. Angie Craig on Saturday urged President Biden to step aside as the Democratic party’s nominee.
“As an elected leader, I feel a responsibility to be honest about what I believe, even when it’s hard to hear. President Biden is a good man & I appreciate his lifetime of service. But I believe he should step aside for the next generation of leadership,” Ms. Craig, Minnesota Democrat, said in a statement posted on X.
“This is not a decision I’ve come to lightly, but there is simply too much at stake to risk a second Donald Trump presidency,” she continued. “That’s why I respectfully call on President Biden to step aside as the Democratic nominee for a second term as president and allow for a new generation of leaders to step forward.”
Ms. Craig’s stand comes after the same by Democratic Reps. Mike Quigley of Illinois, Lloyd Doggett of Texas, Raul Grijalva of Arizona and Seth Moulton of Massachusetts.
Despite the demand for a change of course since his incoherent debate against a strong Donald Trump last week, Mr. Biden has refused to get out of the race. In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopolous on Friday, the president chalked up his performance as just a “bad night.”
Democrats in the Senate are also seeking a solution to the nominee issue. The Washington Post reported that Virginia Sen. Mark Warner is working to build support among colleagues to ask Mr. Biden to drop his reelection bid.
