As we approach the homestretch in what is being called the most important election of our lifetimes, it is critical that we get a good picture of the candidates running for Congress and the White House. With the presidential race in such flux, it is even more critical that we make good choices for the Senate and House.

For the first time in several years, the GOP has a viable candidate for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. Unlike most of those in Congress who have spent their lives as career politicians, Mike Van Meter has served his country and his community in the U.S. Navy, law enforcement, the FBI and most recently as an addiction counselor. It would seem reasonable to have a rational debate between candidate Van Meter and his Democratic opponent, Rep. Gerry Connolly, to see who might best serve the people of their district.

However, word has it that Mr. Connolly is afraid to debate. This is understandable given his record of supporting a federal agenda that has given us 20% inflation, open borders, increases in crime and trillions in debt that will be passed to our children and grandchildren.

As a resident of Fairfax and a constituent of Mr. Connolly, I believe it would be useful to the constituents of the 11th District to have the two face off. Each should tell voters why he is the right choice for Congress and how he would approach the growing problems we are facing statewide and nationwide.
