It would be a mistake for Americans to allow state tax dollars to go toward propping up local media outlets. It’s not government’s job to pay journalists’ salaries. Yet some states are budgeting toward this as we speak.

As Roger Ream, president of the Fund for American Studies says, Illinois has just included in its budget proposal $25 million to hire news outlets to retain journalists. 

As he warns: “When government is providing that kind of money it will have control over media.”

Don’t believe that? Think of the government’s control of social media during the Covid crisis. Then multiply that times 100.
