President Biden on Wednesday released his 53rd round of federal judicial nominees, bringing his total to 254 during his term.
His latest nominations include New York State Court of Claims Judge Anthony J. Brindisi for the Northern District of New York, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany R. Johnson for the Northern District of Georgia and Pennsylvania Executive Deputy Attorney General Keli M. Neary for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
The latest round comes as Senate Democrats get ready to confirm Meredith Vacca for the Western District of New York later Wednesday. She’ll make history if confirmed as the first Asian American woman to sit on that bench.
Diversity has been one of Mr. Biden’s goals as he appointed judges to the bench. He vowed during his 2020 campaign to appoint the first Black female justice of the nation’s highest court if a vacancy arose. He made good on that promise with Ketanji Brown Jackson in 2022 after Justice Stephen G. Breyer retired.
Since taking office, Mr. Biden has that one Supreme Court appointment, 43 federal appeals court nominees and 157 district court picks.
By comparison, former President Donald Trump had two Supreme Court appointments, 53 appeals court nominees and 146 district court judges confirmed at this point of his administration. Later in 2020, Amy Coney Barrett upped Mr. Trump’s Supreme Court confirmations to three.
