Tesla on Tuesday recalled 1.8 million vehicles over a software issue that could fail to detect an unlatched hood.
According to the recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla has already begun issuing an over-the-air software update to fix the issue.
The recall affects Tesla Models 3, S and X from 2021-2024 and Model Y vehicles made from 2020-2024.
If left untreated, the issue could lead to unprompted hood openings while a Tesla is in motion, increasing the risk of driver injury.
Tesla said it began investigating the issue in March after a series of complaints from Chinese customers. The company then began engineering studies in North America and Europe last month and decided to recall the vehicles in early July.
This week’s recall comes after Tesla recalled nearly all of its operational vehicles in the U.S. over issues with its “Autopilot” program. The recall and subsequent crash reports led the NHTSA to open an investigation into the company’s self-driving program.
The company also has issued numerous recalls on its new Cybertruck, including fixing issues with the truck’s accelerator and windshield wipers.
