California Gov. Gavin Newsom will be in Washington on Wednesday to meet with President Biden and show his support for his reelection bid amid calls for Mr. Biden to exit the race.
Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, will be there to “stand with the president,” his campaign spokesman told KCRA. Other Democratic governors will also be in attendance in Washington.
The California governor’s name has been floated as someone who could replace Mr. Biden on the presidential ticket. Calls for the president to step aside and let someone else run on the Democratic ticket have grown since his shaky performance at Thursday’s debate in Georgia.
But Mr. Newsom, who has been a vocal supporter of Mr. Biden, has maintained that he will not take the position from the president.
“I think it’s unhelpful, and I think it’s unnecessary,” Mr. Newsom said. “We’ve got to go in and keep our heads high, and as I say, we’ve got to have the back of this president.”
“You do not turn your back because of one performance,” he said. “What kind of party does that? It has been a master class.
He said Mr. Biden “has delivered” throughout his four years.
“We need to deliver for him at this moment,” Mr. Newsom said.
