The Boston Globe on Wednesday urged President Biden to end his reelection bid, citing a lack of sufficient explanation for his “historically bad” debate performance against former President Donald Trump last week.
“In the days since last week’s presidential debate, President Biden’s team has said little that adequately explains why his performance was historically bad, beyond that he had a cold,” the paper’s editorial board wrote. “What we mostly heard instead was the closing of ranks around a beleaguered and wounded candidates,” the editorial board continued.
The Boston Globe becomes the latest major liberal-leaning paper to call on Mr. Biden to bow out of the presidential race after his debate performance last week. The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, the Economist and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution have also called on Mr. Biden to bow out.
“The nation’s confidence has been shaken,” the Globe’s board wrote, acknowledging that replacing the president on the ticket would be a “risky and complicated process.”
However, Mr. Biden won almost all the delegates to the Democratic National Convention in the party’s primaries and caucuses this year.
To be free to vote for anyone other than Mr. Biden on the first ballot at the convention under party rules, he would have to “release” them, meaning that the only possible scenario for Mr. Biden not to be the nominee is that he voluntarily step aside.
Mr. Biden and the White House have adamantly insisted he isn’t going anywhere and will remain the Democratic nominee.
“No one is pushing me out. I’m not leaving. I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win,” the president said Wednesday on a conference call with campaign staff, according to sources familiar with the matter.
