Tech billionaire Elon Musk walked back his commitment to give $45 million a month to support former President Donald Trump’s White House bid, saying he plans to give much less.

During a sit-down interview with conservative pundit Jordan Peterson, Mr. Musk threw cold water on reports that he planned to donate that much to a pro-Trump political action committee, saying the figure was “simply not true.”

Mr. Musk elaborated later on X, criticizing the reporting on his initial commitment to support the PAC.

“I am making some donations to America PAC, but at a much lower level and the key values of the PAC are supporting a meritocracy & individual freedom,” he wrote. “Republicans are mostly, but not entirely, on the side of merit & freedom.”

Mr. Musk didn’t elaborate on how much he will give or if his contributions will be monthly.

The Wall Street Journal broke the story Monday about Mr. Musk’s monthly donations to America PAC.

The comments come just over a week after Mr. Musk offered his full-throated endorsement of Mr. Trump after the former president survived an assassination attempt on July 13.

The endorsement was a change of pace for Mr. Musk, who had said he wouldn’t endorse any candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
