President Biden will deliver a prime-time Oval Office address Wednesday evening, days after withdrawing from the 2024 race.

Mr. Biden, posting on X, said, “I will address the nation from the Oval Office on what lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people.” It will air at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Mr. Biden, 81, is recovering from COVID-19 and has not been seen in public in nearly a week. He spoke to supporters via a telephone conference call Monday at a campaign event for Vice President Kamala Harris, who is in line to replace him at the top of the ticket.

Mr. Biden made his bombshell withdrawal announcement on Sunday afternoon, surprising even his closest campaign aides. It followed weeks of intense pressure from Democratic lawmakers and other top officials who warned him he had no chance of defeating former President Donald Trump and would take House and Senate Democratic candidates down with him in defeat.

Mr. Biden resisted those calls up until Sunday afternoon, when he pulled out of the race without even warning his campaign team in advance.

“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for my term,” Mr. Biden said.

Since Mr. Biden quit his bid for reelection, Republicans have been calling on him to leave office immediately.
