The Secret Service has enhanced Vice President Kamala Harris’ security protections in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
Mr. Biden’s decision has made Ms. Harris the front-runner to claim Democrats’ presidential nomination.
“With the announcement of the president no longer running, we have made adjustments to the vice president’s detail,” Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle told Congress on Monday.
She also said they are preparing a new detail for a future Democratic vice-presidential nominee.
Ms. Cheatle told the House Oversight and Accountability Committee that she has drawn no conclusions about how Mr. Trump came within a quarter of an inch of being killed by a would-be assassin’s bullet, and declined to answer many questions about the event.
But she said even without knowing what went wrong, they are making changes to how they provide protection to the 36 people under persistent Secret Service coverage, and to sites around Washington, D.C.
She also said they adjusted security at last week’s Republican National Convention after the Trump shooting.
That contrasts with what Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s coordinator for the GOP convention, said in the wake of the shooting.
“There have been no changes to our current operational security plans for this event,” Ms. Gibson-Cicchino said.
