Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi officially threw her support behind Vice President Kamala Harris Monday as she moves to take President Biden’s spot on the Democratic presidential ticket.
Ms. Pelosi, who had been working behind the scenes to force out Mr. Biden, said she was giving her endorsement “with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future.”
“My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for president is official, personal and political,” she said.
Ms. Pelosi is the latest high-profile Democrat to back Ms. Harris, a fellow Californian, formally for the nomination.
“Officially, I have seen Kamala Harris’s strength and courage as a champion for working families, notably fighting for a woman’s right to choose,” she said. “Personally, I have known Kamala Harris for decades as rooted in strong values, faith and a commitment to public service. Politically, make no mistake: Kamala Harris as a woman in politics is brilliantly astute – and I have full confidence that she will lead us to victory in November.”
Mr. Biden announced he was dropping out of the presidential race Sunday with a letter posted on X. He endorsed Ms. Harris to replace him on the ballot.
Ms. Harris has secured a growing list of endorsements from Democrats in the first 24 hours since Mr. Biden bowed out, including from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, along with Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and the second-and-third-ranking House Democratic leaders, Reps. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and Pete Aguilar of California.
