In her first appearance since President Biden dropped out of the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday heaped lavish praise upon her boss, saying his legacy of accomplishment is “unmatched in modern history.”

“In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office,” Ms. Harris said.

The vice president filled in for Mr. Biden and spoke for roughly four minutes at an event on the White House South Lawn celebrating college athletes. The White House’s NCAA Sports Day brought teams from across college sports, with more than 1,000 student athletes from roughly 50 teams in attendance.

The event was supposed to be hosted by Mr. Biden, but he is still quarantined in Delaware after contracting COVID-19 last week. Ms. Harris took charge of the event, although she also spoke at the White House’s NCAA Sports Day last year.

Ms. Harris spent the bulk of her remarks praising Mr. Biden, who endorsed her as the Democratic presidential nominee after bowing out of the race on Sunday.

The vice president also recounted her friendship with Mr. Biden’s late son, Beau Biden, who passed away in 2015. Beau Biden served as attorney general of Delaware during the same time that Ms. Harris was the attorney general of California.

“The qualities that Beau revered in his father are the same qualities that I have seen every day in our president. His honesty, his integrity, his commitment to his family and his family, his big heart and his love, deep love of country. And I am first-hand witness that every day our president, Joe Biden, fights for the American people.”

Turning briefly to the athletes in attendance, Ms. Harris spoke for two minutes about the obstacles and challenges they overcame to achieve their success.

“You demonstrated that true greatness requires more than skill. It requires grit and determination. You all know what it means to commit and persevere, and you know what it means to count on teammates during the course of a long season,” she said.
