Rep. Ronny Jackson, who served as the White House physician for former President Donald Trump, said that the ex-president’s gunshot wound has begun to “heal properly.”

Mr. Jackson, Texas Republican, wrote in a letter on Saturday that he has been by Mr. Trump’s side performing wound care to his right ear since last weekend after an attempt was made against the former president’s life.

“I have been with President Trump since that time, and I have evaluated and treated his wound daily. He is doing well,” Mr. Jackson wrote. “As reported and witnessed by the entire world, he sustained a gunshot wound to the right ear from a high-powered rifle used by the would be assassin.”

Mr. Jackson served as the White House physician under both Mr. Trump and former President Barack Obama, and noted that prior position compelled him to check in and take care of the Republican presidential nominee.

Mr. Trump has been wearing a white bandage over his ear since the assassination attempt, where Thomas Crooks opened fire on him at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, leaving the former president wounded while firefighter Corey Comperatore was struck and killed.

The bullet barely missed the former president, who cocked his head to point at a series of charts outlining the numbers of migrants who had entered the country illegally under President Biden’s administration.

A loud pop was heard, and Mr. Trump could be seen clutching his ear and wincing before Secret Service agents tackled him to the ground as more gunshots rang out.

Mr. Jackson wrote that the bullet was less than a quarter of an inch from hitting Mr. Trump’s head, and left behind a 2 cm wide wound on the top part of his right ear that, because of the “broad and blunt” nature of the wound, did not require stitches.

He noted that given the large amount of blood vessels in the area, the wound still bleeds occasionally, which is why the former president has continued to wear a white bandage.

Mr. Jackson also lauded the initial care that Mr. Trump received at Butler Memorial Hospital, adding that Mr. Trump received a CT scan of his head following the shooting and that he is expected to undergo a hearing exam.

“In summary, former President Trump is doing well, and he is recovering as expected from the gunshot wound sustained last Saturday afternoon,” Mr. Jackson said. “I am extremely thankful his life was spared. It is an absolute miracle he wasn’t killed.”
