President Biden finished his sixth round of COVID medication Saturday and appeared to be improving “steadily,” said White House Dr. Kevin O’Connor.
Mr. Biden tested positive for the virus while campaigning in Las Vegas, leading to the cancellation of a speech at the Latin civil rights group UnidosUS’ convention.
“President Biden completed his sixth dose of PAXLOVID this morning. He is still experiencing a loose, nonproductive cough and hoarseness, but his symptoms continue to improve steadily,” Dr. O’Connor said. “His pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature remain absolutely normal. His oxygen saturation continues to be excellent on room air. His lungs remain clear.”
Dr. O’Connor noted that Mr. Biden likely had contracted the virus’ KP .2.3 variant, a dominant COVID infection in the U.S., according to the CDC.
“The president continues to tolerate treatment well and will continue PAXLOVID as planned,” the doctor said. “He continues to perform all of his presidential duties.”
Mr. Biden’s COVID diagnosis capped off another bad week for his campaign as more congressional Democrats and donors urged him to quit the race after his dismal debate performance in June.
He has remained publicly undeterred, announcing in an email Friday that he looked forward to returning to the campaign trail once he recovers from the virus.
Mr. Biden is also slated to meet next week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss negotiations to forge a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Mr. Netanyahu will address both chambers of Congress on Wednesday.
