Tesla’s futuristic electric Cybertruck outsold Ford’s F-150 Lightning in May, suggesting the electric vehicle giant’s grip on the EV market may still be tight.

According to vehicle registration data released this week, the Cybertruck ran away with 3,907 registrations in May versus the Ford Lightning’s 2,353. However, the Ford Lighting has still outsold the Cybertruck year to date.

May is the first time Tesla’s newest vehicle has surpassed the best-selling EV truck since it launched last November.

Ford’s Lightning has been the most popular electric truck since it hit the road in 2022. Bulging sales numbers led to the firm’s decision to double production of the hot vehicle later that year. However, slowing demand and increased interest rates the following year led to cutbacks in EV production at Ford and other automakers.

As competition from more established automakers has grown over the past few years, Tesla’s market share in the EV market has dipped below 50%.

However, the Cybertruck’s numbers have shown that Tesla still has devoted fans who eagerly await the next eye-catching design from the company.

Still, the Cybertruck has had problems. The vehicle has been subject to numerous recall orders that cover issues such as a malfunctioning wiper blade to a faulty accelerator pad that could force the pedal down.
