Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle plans to comply with a subpoena summoning her to testify in Congress next week about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Ms. Cheatle is facing increasingly strong calls to resign amid criticism that the Secret Service did not properly secure the grounds at Mr. Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

A gunman was able to climb onto a building 130 yards away and take shots at the rally. A bullet grazed Mr. Trump’s ear, killed a rally attendee and gravely injured two others.

The House oversight committee had issued a subpoena on Tuesday.

“Director Cheatle has agreed to comply with Chairman Comer’s subpoena and the hearing will take place as scheduled on Monday, July 22,” an Oversight panel spokeswoman said. “Americans demand and deserve answers from the Director about the attempted assassination of President Trump and the Secret Service’s egregious failures.”

Homeland Security officials said Ms. Cheatle will testify, but the parties are haggling over the date and DHS says she is busy providing security at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

“We would appreciate the opportunity for Director Cheatle to appear before the Committee on July 25, July 26, or during the week of July 29, 2024, rather than July 22, as the Committee has proposed,” a Homeland Security Department official wrote to Mr. Comer.
