Kai Trump shed light on what former President Donald Trump is like as a grandfather — and it involves golf, candy and soda.
The 17-year-old took to the stage just before her father Donald Trump Jr. at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night. The former president smiled proudly as the high schooler shared stories about him.
“He’s just a normal grandpa. He gives us candy and soda when our parents aren’t looking and always wants to know how we’re doing in school,” she said.
Kai, an avid golfer like the former president, said he’s always calling to talk about golf.
“He calls me during the middle of the school day to ask how my golf game is going and tell me all about his,” she said. “But then I have to remind him that I’m in school and I have to call him back later.”
She said that when they go golfing together, he tries to “get inside my head” if they’re not on the same team.
“And he’s always surprised that I don’t let him get to me,” she said. “But I have to remind him that I’m a Trump too.”
She said the media makes Mr. Trump “seem like a different person” but that he’s “very caring and loving.”
Kai is the eldest of the Trump grandchildren, and potentially the convention’s youngest speaker.
In a post on her Instagram story early in the day, she wrote that she was “honored to be speaking at the RNC.”
The post included a reposted photo from her father’s account announcing the Trump-Vance presidential ticket.
Kai’s comments could be seen as a look into what the family’s younger generation thinks of their grandfather and help soften the image of him and the rest of the Trump family.
