Remarkably — yet not unexpectedly — days after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle remains in her job (“Secret Service director, DEI hiring under scrutiny in wake of Trump security lapses,” web, July 14).

But this is the traditional modus operandi for federal officials in Washington. Let’s say a contracted bus driver was assigned to deliver a WNBA team to a game site two hours before tipoff. Instead, however, he makes multiple unscheduled stops along the way, including one at a Dairy Queen to buy everyone ice cream. The bus arrives at the game five minutes after buzzer time. Guess what would happen to the driver in this situation? He would immediately be fired.

Has the fact that first lady Jill Biden was the main proponent of hiring Ms. Cheatle, as has been reported, been a factor in Ms. Cheatle’s staying at her post? You tell me. But if Ms. Cheatle refuses to resign, what happens the next time someone comes to kill?
