House lawmakers will subpoena Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to compel her to appear at a July 22 hearing about the attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump.
Lawmakers on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee announced the move after the Secret Service backed out of a briefing that was set to take place Tuesday.
The Homeland Security Department, which oversees the Secret Service, scuttled the briefing at the last minute.
Lawmakers were set to talk to Secret Service officials about how a gunman was able to climb the roof of a building 130 yards away from Mr. Trump as he addressed a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Mr. Trump’s ear was grazed by a bullet.
Ms. Cheatle had already agreed to appear on July 22 but the subpoena will be issued “to head off any attempt by DHS to backtrack on her appearance,” a committee spokeswoman said.
In an ABC News interview, Ms. Cheatle called the shooting “unacceptable.” She has resisted calls to resign.
