President Biden will resume his campaign schedule Monday after a pause in advertising and other activities to address the national shock over the assassination attempt on his GOP rival, former President Donald Trump.
Mr. Biden will sit for an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt in the afternoon. The interview will air at 9 p.m., coinciding with the first night of programming at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
In the interview, Mr. Biden will likely address the mood in the U.S. after a gunman grazed Mr. Trump’s ear at a Pennsylvania rally and killed a 50-year-old father, Corey Comperatore.
Mr. Biden is also under pressure to display his cognitive fitness for office given his advanced age of 81 and poor debate performance on June 27.
Later Monday, Mr. Biden will fly to Las Vegas for a slate of events in Nevada, a swing-state prize that will award six electoral votes.
Mr. Biden is scheduled to speak at the 115th NAACP National Convention on Tuesday before attending an economic summit with Rep. Steven Horsford, Nevada Democrat.
On Wednesday, the president will give the keynote address at the UnidosUS Annual Conference — a large Latino gathering — and later attend a “campaign community event,” according to the White House.
Mr. Biden late Sunday called on the nation to “cool it down” after Mr. Trump’s brush with gunfire and said Americans should settle their differences at the ballot box.
The scary situation has overshadowed Democratic doubts about Mr. Biden’s ability to lead their ticket into November, though questions about his fitness will likely come back to the fore.
