MILWAUKEE — Republicans formally nominated former President Donald Trump to serve atop the party’s 2024 ticket Monday in a round of votes that took place just as Mr. Trump announced his vice presidential pick online.
Mr. Trump easily secured the delegates needed to clinch the nomination, two days after surviving an assassin’s bullet at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
While states were nominating Mr. Trump from the convention floor in Milwaukee, Mr. Trump revealed on his Truth Social media site that Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, 39, will be his running mate.
Mr. Trump’ s son, Eric Trump, then announced his father had won all the delegates from Florida, crossing Mr. Trump over the threshold needed to secure the nomination.
Eric Trump, who stood on the floor with other Trump family members, called his father “the greatest president that’s ever lived,” and declared him the nominee.
Delegates shouted “Trump” and “USA” from the floor of the convention center.
Mr. Trump is in Milwaukee and is expected to speak at the convention later Monday.
