President Biden said Thursday he would step aside for Vice President Kamala Harris if someone indicated she could defeat former President Donald Trump and he could not.
“No one’s saying that,” Mr. Biden said.
Some polls, however, show Mr. Biden slightly trailing Mr. Trump or statistically tied with the presumptive GOP nominee, while Ms. Harris leads Mr. Trump by a few points or at least fares better than her boss.
Mr. Biden said delegates are “free to do whatever they want” at the August Democratic National Convention and support another candidate, even as he insists he is staying at the top of the ticket.
“That’s the democratic process,” Mr. Biden said.
Mr. Biden said he has “overwhelming support” from the primary elections, and a delegate mutiny is “not going to happen.”
He also pointed to polls that showed that he was winning among likely voters, even though he said polls cannot be trusted.
Mr. Biden faces intense pressure from Democrats to step aside because of concerns about his advanced age and poor performance at the June 27 debate in Atlanta.
