First lady Jill Biden remained defiant amid calls for President Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee, insisting in an interview Monday that he will stay in the race.

Mrs. Biden spoke with Vogue from Camp David over the weekend, where the family holed up to assess the path forward after Mr. Biden’s abysmal debate performance against former President Trump.

Mrs. Biden said the Biden family “will not let those 90 minutes define the four years he’s been president.”

“We will continue to fight,” she said, adding that Mr. Biden “will always do what’s best for the country.”

Mrs. Biden’s hard-line stance comes after a torrent of criticism directed at her for not forcing her 81-year-old husband to step aside as the Democratic nominee after the debate.

After the debate, she told Mr. Biden that he “did such a great job,” a comment that sparked widespread mockery following a performance in which Mr. Biden repeatedly lost his train of thought, gave meandering answers and struggled to complete sentences.

In the Vogue interview, Mrs. Biden said she directs the president to take action “in so many different areas.”

“I tell him what I’m seeing, what I’m hearing — and he gets it,” she said. “And that is where the magic happens.”

The interview came with a cover photo that sparked memes parodying it. One critic Photoshopped it to show Mrs. Biden in a nurse uniform, while another changed the caption to read, “Joe will run — and he will like it.”
