How do you diagnose an individual who is in the midst of a crisis and feels discomfort, but does not know they are in a crisis? This describes the majority of our population and the current predicament of our Supreme Court (“Trump asks Maine judge to halt proceedings on ballot access, let Supreme Court rule,” web, Jan. 8).

The political left in our country is applauding and promoting states taking away the right of voters to choose the candidates they want in office. But it is vital that no political candidate — including Donald Trump — be taken off a ballot for political reasons.

It is also crucial that no candidate suffers the flagrantly unconstitutional mistreatment of being barred from running for office because a few people believe they have the right to override the Constitution.

It would be beyond a dereliction of duty for the Supreme Court to fail to come to our country’s aid in this most dire moment. Unfortunately, that’s what will happen soon enough, when the justices feel the effect of having no police agency, armed forces or Justice Department to protect their right to remain a branch of government.

The court’s sole right to exist is based on our citizens’ cultural belief in that right. This once deeply embedded cultural ethic is now fracturing from its bedrock foundation to the point that the court could cease to be the highest in the land.
