Sen. Joe Manchin III’s wife, Gayle, has been stabilized after being in a car wreck Monday in Alabama.

Mrs. Manchin, 76, and her colleague, Guy Land, were on their way to an Appalachian Regional Commission conference from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport when an SUV hit their vehicle.

“Both were admitted to [University of Alabama at Birmingham] Hospital and are receiving excellent care,” the West Virginia Democrat said in a statement Tuesday. “She remains in stable condition but will stay there for a couple of days for precautionary measures.”

Mrs. Manchin is the federal co-chairwoman of the Appalachian Regional Commission, which is involved in the mountain range’s economy.

Police said the suspect involved is being held in the Homewood City Jail pending multiple felony warrants.
