It took a little time, but better late than never (“Harvard President Claudine Gay resigning amid antisemitism, plagiarism accusations,” web, Jan. 2).

While Harvard President Claudine Gay says she is resigning with a heavy heart, there is no doubt that the university made a deal that allows her to resign with “dignity” yet remain on the faculty.

Ms. Gay should have been fired after her egregious handling of antisemitism on the school’s campus and her disgraceful congressional hearing testimony, during which she refused to say that calling for the genocide of Jews violates Harvard’s code of ethics. But allegations of plagiarism were the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Nevertheless, just because Ms. Gay is no longer president doesn’t mean that Harvard’s Jewish students will be treated fairly, or that they are safe at the school. They will now merely be tolerated.
