California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged his party on Sunday to be wary of third-party presidential candidates acting as spoilers for President Biden.
“We have to be worried,” Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, said on ABC’s “This Week.” “But you know what? You got to control the controllables. You got to control what you have to control. Right now, it’s getting the vote out.”
Mr. Newsom has been hitting the campaign trail hard for Mr. Biden, raising questions about the governor’s own future presidential ambition.
Despite the warning, Mr. Newsom advised liberal and anti-Trump organizations against their efforts to keep the centrist political group No Labels from gaining 2024 presidential ballot access with a third-party unity ticket featuring an unnamed Republican and Democrat.
“When you try to suppress choice and voice, it tends to backfire,” he said.
Mr. Newsom described No Labels, which has alleged there’s a criminal conspiracy against it and has asked for help from the Justice Department, as “a solution in search of a problem.”
