Virginia is now a border state like Texas, according to the commonwealth’s Republican governor.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin posted on social media Wednesday evening in support of the Lone Star State in its dispute with the federal government over border security or the lack thereof.
“Virginia stands with Texas,” Mr. Youngkin said.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “is doing the job Joe Biden and his border czar refuse to do to secure our border,” he wrote on Facebook.
“The Biden administration has turned every state into a border state. We must stop the flow of fentanyl, save lives, and secure our southern border,” Mr. Youngkin added in a post that he also put on X.
For the past several months, Texas has been moving to secure the border with Mexico, accusing the Biden administration of pursuing an open-borders policy and allowing illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to flood the country, most especially Texas and the three other states across from Mexico.
The most pointed clash right now is happening in Eagle Pass, where Texas National Guard troops have taken control of a local park that had been a major staging point for illegal immigrants to cross the Rio Grande and reach U.S. soil.
Texas has also placed razor wire along miles of the river to try to discourage people wading across. The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that Border Patrol agents can cut the wire.
Mr. Abbott issued a defiant statement Wednesday saying Texas is merely repelling an “invasion” under the U.S. Constitution, which he said gives a state special authority to defend its own borders if the national government does not.
