D.C. fire officials on Thursday said a gas explosion destroyed one building and damaged another along a major commercial corridor in Southeast.

Authorities said the explosion took place on the second floor of a building in the 1200 block of Marion Barry Avenue SE around 10 a.m.

Officials said the area was evacuated prior to the explosion because of an active gas leak.

One person was injured by flying debris, authorities said, but the severity of their injuries wasn’t disclosed.

D.C. Fire and EMS said crews are working to control the blaze and limit damage to other neighboring businesses.
