Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said that former President Donald Trump’s win at the Iowa caucus’ may not be all that it’s cracked up to be.

Mr. Pritzker, a Democrat, pointed out that almost half of the Republican Party voters in Iowa voted against Mr. Trump.

“I mean, this is the most famous Republican. He’s the guy who, you know, basically built the modern Republican Party, the MAGA Republican Party that the Democrats are running against, and half the people in that party didn’t vote for Donald Trump,” he said on MSNBC.

Mr. Trump won Iowa with 51% of the vote, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis with 21.2% and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley with 19.1%.

Mr. Pritzker, a Biden campaign surrogate, said the results were “telling.”

“It tells you the weakness of Donald Trump and also the opportunity for Democrats because in the end, look, if the base doesn’t turn out for Donald Trump in the general election enthusiastically, and Democrats turn out its base, this is all about independents, and independents don’t like Donald Trump,” he said.

In response to a request for comment, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said: “Who is J.B. Pritzker?”

Mr. Pritzker admitted that if Mr. Trump can win the New Hampshire primary, followed by South Carolina, then the GOP nomination race would probably be over.

“The truth is all of these candidates are running as sort of mini-me Trump Republicans,” he said.
