Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s speech announcing the end of his presidential bid was certainly a case of the pot calling the kettle black (“Chris Christie ends 2024 presidential bid, dings Trump on his way out,” web, Jan. 10). If anyone is into politics just for a power trip, it’s Mr. Christie.

Many believe Mr. Christie’s deep hatred of Donald Trump lies in Mr. Trump’s refusing to appoint him as his attorney general or give him another post in his Cabinet, something Mr. Christie probably felt his earlier support had earned him. Meanwhile, Mr. Christie’s whole career is a testament to his own quest for power. To accuse Mr. Trump of the same is hypocrisy.

First, Mr. Trump was urged to run for decades before he actually ran. And I believe him when he says he did so only because he believes our country is on the verge of being destroyed from within. More importantly, there is no one in my lifetime who has done more for this country or sacrificed so much.

The good accomplished by Mr. Trump’s policies was felt not only by American citizens, but by people around the world. That he did so much during the first three years of his term while under unrelenting attack is astounding. It took a worldwide pandemic fomented by China to curtail Mr. Trump’s positive agenda.

At the same time, his sacrifices have been monumental. He’s lost half his fortune and has been made to endure seven years of vituperation from all sides. The daily assaults from the mainstream and power elites in government and Hollywood have had a noticeable effect on both him and his family. Yet he perseveres.

Some may not care for his braggadocio, but they should at least understand it. Mr. Trump has earned accolades, yet he gets only jeers. Because his triumphs have always been routinely buried by the mainstream media, he must take every opportunity to promote what’s he’s managed to do.

I’m not saying Donald Trump is perfect, but he’s head and shoulders above any of his opponents. His enemies know he threatens their power, so they will continue to do everything they can to stop him. Americans should pray for Mr. Trump’s safety and success; the future of our country may depend on it.
