As a longtime fan of Cal Thomas and a devoted reader of his columns and books, I now wonder if he may be suffering from a case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

His latest column, “Biden vs. Trump: The evil of two lessers” (web, Jan. 8), seems to reinforce my suspicions. Mr. Thomas is critical of President Biden but unwilling to offer one positive word about former President Donald Trump. One need only compare the world under the Trump administration to the world under the current administration to appreciate that we are not facing the “evil of two lessers” in the upcoming election.

During the Trump administration, we enjoyed a strong, stable economy, low inflation, energy independence and relative peace in the Middle East and Ukraine. We saw NATO nations actually contributing their share and an improved trade agreement between Mexico, Canada and the U.S. Our southern border was secure and Central American countries were working with the U.S. and Mexico to restore order to the immigration process. We also enjoyed improved relations with North Korea and China.

I understand that Mr. Thomas despises Mr. Trump, but this seems to be mostly based on issues of personality. I suggest that most voters neither live with nor will ever be neighbors of Mr. Trump. Therefore, most voters probably give little weight to his personality. But they would be delighted to again see the good conditions his administration brought to this country.
