CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer faced a sudden health issue during a live broadcast on Thursday, leading to an abrupt cutaway to a commercial.
The episode unfolded on the set of “The Situation Room,” where Mr. Blitzer was speaking with Rep. Jamie Raskin, Maryland Democrat, about the Supreme Court case over whether former President Donald Trump should be allowed on Colorado’s primary ballot.
In the midst of the interview, it became apparent to viewers that Mr. Blitzer was experiencing some discomfort, appearing to be stifling a retch. The seasoned journalist’s attempt to continue the show was evident, but his endeavors to stave off what seemed to be nausea were unsuccessful.
As Mr. Raskin spoke, the camera switched to show him exclusively, but soon the sound of someone retching interrupted the live feed before the network switched to a commercial break. Mediaite, an online news source, was among the first to report on the incident.
Following the impromptu pause, CNN legal correspondent Paula Reid stepped in to carry on with the newscast for the evening, which lasted until 6 p.m. Mr. Blitzer did not return to his role that night.
The incident led to a mix of worried inquiries and lighthearted jokes from viewers on social media platforms, with some users creatively connecting Mr. Blitzer’s sudden bout of illness to the political discourse.
One online wag quipped that “Raskin’s LIES are enough to make anyone vomit.”
The network said Mr. Blitzer “was not feeling his best” that afternoon in a statement to Will Sommer, a journalist with The Washington Post.
The anchor later addressed the situation on X, conveying reassurance to his audience: “I’m fine! Thanks for the well wishes. I’ll see you back in the Situation Room soon.”
