First we had a group of migrant “asylum-seekers” assault two police officers in New York City’s Times Square (“Governor backs deportation of police officers’ assailants,” page 1, Feb. 2). They took turns kicking the officers’ heads and torsos. After being arrested, the assailants were released within hours without bail. Neither the district attorney nor the judge requested bail — yet more than one had a previous arrest.

Upon leaving the Manhattan Criminal Court after arraignment, one gave reporters the middle finger.

Second, the New York Police Department has been tracking another larger group of migrants who are roaming Manhattan as pickpockets. What’s next, carjacking? U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement should be allowed to immediately deport any migrant who assaults law enforcement officials or commits crimes against citizens.

Being in America is a privilege earned by going through the legal process of becoming a citizen. It is not an automatic right upon your first steps on our soil. Migrants should obey the same laws we do and suffer the same consequences for any crimes they commit.
