Most Americans rate President Biden’s first term in office poorly, according to a new poll.
A survey conducted by Rasmussen Reports sought to assess the public’s perception of Mr. Biden’s presidency as either a success or a failure, a fundamental test with implications for his potential reelection bid.
According to the poll results, a majority of participants, 58%, viewed Mr. Biden’s tenure as unsuccessful. This sentiment was further broken down, with 40% labeling his presidency a “complete failure”—the most negative option provided—while another 18% found it to be “mostly unsuccessful.”
In contrast, a portion of those surveyed did consider Mr. Biden’s presidency successful; however, just 9% went so far as to describe it as “a complete success.”
The poll indicated a notable age gap in the president’s approval ratings. Among those aged 40 and older, negative assessments were particularly prevalent. Specifically, 49% of respondents between the ages of 40-64 and 47% of those above 64 categorized Mr. Biden’s performance as a “complete failure.”
Partisanship appears to play a significant role in evaluating the president’s performance. Democrats were harsher in judging Mr. Biden than Republicans were in rating former President Donald Trump. Among Democrat respondents, 69% affirmed Mr. Biden’s presidency as a success, but only 19% considered it a “complete success.”
The poll reflected the strong partisan divide, with 86% of Republican participants disapproving of Mr. Biden’s tenure, and none from the Republican side rating it as a “complete success.” A mere 13% of Republicans found his presidency to be “mostly successful.”
In a comparative look Mr. Trump’s approval ratings, Rasmussen Reports shows a more favorable overall reception during his term. A reported 56% of voters regarded Mr. Trump’s presidency as a success, with 22% defining it as a “complete success,” while 42% viewed it as unsuccessful.
There was some crossing of party lines, with 28% of Democrats acknowledging Mr. Trump’s presidency as a success, including 11% who went as far as to describe it as a “complete success.”
